40th Birthday Doggy Joke

It was almost my husband John's 40th birthday, and he mused "These will be the Dog Days of my life." We both love animals and have two dogs, plus or minus a few that come through our home for rescue fostering. John's always felt that the fleeting lifespan of our four-legged friends is a poignant reminder to live life to its fullest.

Our circle of friends includes many animal lovers, and we often get together in small groups with our furry companions.

I decided to plan a surprise "going to the dogs" birthday party with them for John's 40th celebration.

Our fellow dog lovers contributed party ideas, and we had a blast putting together a canine-themed party to welcome John into the 40s "pack."

The decorations included a gingerbread dog-house, floral arrangements in the shape of dog friends, home-made animal cookies, and a chocolate birthday cake in the shape of a giant bone.

The gift theme featured canine pursuits: ball tossing launchers, stuffed toy chews, and a portrait of us with our hounds painted by an artist friend.

John's college buddy spirited him out of the house on party morning. As soon as they were out the door the decorations went up, and doggie play equipment was set up in the fenced back yard for the pooches to enjoy. Our friends and their dogs all know each other, so we enjoyed "setting the stage" for John's birthday fun.

When the call came that John was on his way back, we had about 10 minutes to gather inside for the surprise. We two-legged partiers hid in the kitchen after herding all our dogs into the living room.

When John walked through the front door he found himself surrounded by 20 dogs of all kinds. A doggy piņata dangled from the ceiling and dog faces decorated the room and the wrapping paper.

John laughed as he took in the sight, and from the kitchen we roared "Happy Birthday!" We came out carrying his decorated "bone" with its 40 candles ablaze, and broke into a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday!"

It was a very special "Dog Day" John will remember fondly.

We doggy friends have come to say,
"We woof you!" on your special day!

Not long in tooth, nor shed on head,
you've much to dig in years ahead.

Come play with us and you'll soon get,
that your 40s are your best years yet!

Join the pack, get ready for fun,
You'll soon see life has just begun!
