American Ethnic Groups, a Brief History

During the last Ice Age, ancient Americans crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia to Alaska to arrive in North America. Over the next thousands of years they migrated westward and southward, formed hundreds of diverse tribes, and prospered in the fertile, temperate regions of the Americas.

Beginning shortly after Columbus' discovery in 1492, Spanish and French explorers and immigrants came to the territory of the United States. English immigrants began arriving in the early 1600s, followed by Dutch, German, Swedes, and Finns.  In the 1700s, Scots and Irish immigrants came to America.

During the 1800s there were huge waves of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, England, and France.
