Beginning shortly after Columbus' discovery in 1492, Spanish and French explorers and immigrants came to the territory of the United States. English immigrants began arriving in the early 1600s, followed by Dutch, German, Swedes, and Finns. In the 1700s, Scots and Irish immigrants came to America.
