Anniversary Gift, A Perfect Day

Fifteen years ago my wonderful wife, Megan, told me not to worry about making Anniversary plans. She wanted me to relax, enjoy the day, and let her take care of everything. This was refreshing because, as men, we are expected to lead, make plans, and follow them through. A nice change of pace to enjoy the ride.

She told me to pack some comfortable clothes, and said she was driving. Within 45 minutes on the road, I had a hunch where we were going. My guess was confirmed when we pulled into Watkins Glen State Park in western New York.

I had been there before as a child, and was beginning to anticipate exploring the park with Megan. It was a perfect, warm day.

We hiked through the gorge enjoying the waterfalls, taking tons of pictures to remember.

She lead me to a spot high on the canyon wall, where we enjoyed a picnic of sandwiches, fruit, and candy bars while laying on the grass. Afterwards, she took me on a leisurely Lake Seneca tour boat ride.

Next we drove to Lake Cayuga and hiked along a nature trail to see Taughannock Falls. It was time for another picnic, this time on the shore of Lake Cayuga.

Late afternoon, we sampled some wine and shopped for souvenirs in the town of Watkins Glen. By now it was getting dark, and Megan told me that she had rented a park cabin for the night. But first, we were going back to the gorge to watch a laser show!

We walked part way up the gorge until we faced a huge cliff opposite us. We could hear the water rushing through the gorge, but could not see it. A speaker came on and told us the history of the gorge while lasers showed shapes of dinosaurs and other creatures on the canyon walls.

When the show was over and we made our way to the cabin, we were so exhausted that we fell asleep almost instantly in each other’s arms.

Our anniversary gift was a perfect day to remember.
