Birthday in Giza, Egypt

by Kawthar
(Boston, MA)

My husband tells me of his childhood growing up in Giza. He is the youngest of 3 boys and they were fairly poor. He is a muscian, playing the violin since age 7. This enabled him to earn some petty cash at a young age.

When birthday's would roll around he always took it upon himself (if he had some money) to purchase some sort of sweets that are usually only eaten on special occasions. The family would gather after dinner and drink the traditional hot tea and share the sweets. If no money was available to buy sweets then his Mom would bake some gullash or baklava for them to enjoy.

The main event though was the family being together.
