French Ethnic Groups, a Brief History

Early inhabitants who settled the fertile lands now known as France were of Celtic tribes, with later invaders from Greece, the Roman Empire, and assorted Germanic tribes.

French ethnicity is a blend of three main groups over hundreds of years: Celtic, Latin, and Frankish. They represent more than 90% of France's population.

During the 20th century, European immigrants came from Italy, Greece, Poland, Spain and Germany. From France's former colonies came immigrants from Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, and French Indochina.
