Grandparents Day Thank You Poem
by Loren
I remember combing my grandmother's salt and pepper hair and listening to her stories. She told me about her children - my aunts and uncles - about her parents, and their parents as well. Although I had never met many of them, I knew their funniest and most embarrassing moments. I wondered if all Grandmother's stories were true, some were so comical. She told me about growing up on a farm, and how she rode the goats and sheep as a child. She chuckled heartily when she told of the day her younger sister fell into the outhouse. Grandmother stayed active for her age. She loved to swim, and took me with her to the pool. She put her plastic cap on and dived into the water, making me giggle with her antics and enthusiasm. When I tried to mimic her, she patiently taught me how to swim, dive, and stand on my head. She raised a small vegetable garden and let me help. I loved to pick carrots and onions with the soil still on them. Grandmother had a reverence for soil. I knew, because she would rub dirt between her fingers on purpose, and smile. The best breakfast she made for me was grits and beef stew with biscuits. It seemed odd at first, but was delicious. She added fresh tomatoes from the garden, and put cucumber curls on the side. She said it was for garnish, but I knew it was because it's good for me. At night she tucked me in and read to me from the Bible until I fell asleep. Grandparents Day Poem Of Thanks
