Harshitas New Years Resolution, Volunteer!
by Harshita Singh
The Elderly I Serve For My New Years Resolution
Last year I opted for a totally different kind of New Years resolution. I volunteered my time to help orphans and elderly people. I know a resolution like this sounds quite alien to young people of my age (I am 20), but it felt right for me. On the first day of the new year, I enrolled as a volunteer at an organisation engaged in serving both orphans and elderly people. Every day after my last college class, I spent part of my day serving them. One day every week is meant for the outing of the old people and children. They eagerly await this day, as they enjoy going out and having fun. I make special arrangements with the help of other volunteers on occasions like birthdays and festivals. What I get out of this is priceless... My reward is the smiles and happiness I see on the faces of the old people. I listen to their sorrows, feelings, and precious memories of their lives, from which I also learn much. I take them in groups for daily walks, which I enjoy as much as they do. To the orphans I am sister, friend, teacher, and mother. Their sparkling eyes and bright smiles express how much they "love to love" and be loved. I enjoy reading stories and helping them with their studies. What I receive is the love and appreciation of the people I serve. I still volunteer almost every day. My new years resolution has been a success because it makes me happy!
