Indian Birthday in Chennai
by Anuja Muthukumar
In India, the birthdays of children from one to five years old are almost always celebrated. If the birthday child is an infant, he or she will receive gifts such as new clothes, toys, cookies, and other sweets. On party day, the house is decorated with balloons, magic candles, colorful design papers, and lots of flowers! Balloons are sometimes 'bombed' suddenly to increase the festive mood. Even ice crystals can be created by a spray. The most important celebration is cutting of the cake. If it is a baby's birthday, he or she will be held by the parents and helped to blow off the candles and cut the cake with a knife. The first piece is given to the baby, next to parents, and then to everyone else. It is popular to take snapshots of the birthday person, the cake ceremony, the presents, and the guests. Wealthy people often use birthday parties to promote their businesses and careers by inviting famous or special guests. At celebrity birthday parties, it is common to hire stage performances by a singer, dancer, or popular cinema peoples. But a birthday party for Indian children means a huge cake with cherries and plums embedded on it, all types of chocolates, and lastly ice creams. It's a happy day for kids!
