Indian 'First Birthday' Traditions

by Sheeba
(India)

I want to share one of the memorable occasions in my life, my son's first birthday ceremony. His celebration was very grand! We printed 300 birthday invitations with his picture, and invited all our relatives and friends.

The event took place in the community hall of our church.

The hall was decorated with beautiful, natural flowers from Ooty. Special air balloons with my son's name printed on them were floated in the hall.

He received baptism the same day, at 5:00 in the evening. Church pastors conducted the baptism service and prayer meeting, then dog-shaped chocolate cream birthday cake was served.

After the baptism, my grandfather took my son and cut the cake by holding his hand (an important custom in our country). There was a special singing candle in the middle of the cake.

All members of my family presented my son with traditional gifts made of gold. Neighbors and friends blessed my son and also presented many gifts.

The famous singing troupe "Diablos" performed an orchestra program for the celebration. All the Kids who were there were made to dance in the party.

We served many varieties of foods, such as Briyani, chicken fry and mutton for the dinner. There was pop corn, candy and ice cream for everyone.

Each guest who attended received a small bag with a "Thanks For Coming" note as a memento. Each also was given a special birthday cap as a gift. Giving such mementos to all is one of the traditional customs we followed.

I can say this was one of the most memorable occasions in my life!

First Birthday
by: bashir

I have read about Sheeba's sons first Birthday Party with great interest. We had celeberated our grand daughter's First Birth Day in almost Similar way. Apart from all these, there were funny competitions amongst the invited children and presented gifts for the winning babies. There was music chair competition also amongst the mothers and elder children. Now my grand daughter is approaching to her 4th birthday. When I read the story of Sheebs, I remembered the occassion of my grand daughter's first birth day.

May god bless Sheeba to celebrate her sons many many happy birthdays.
