Inspirational Anonymous Friendship Poem

by Greg
(Wilkes Barre, PA, USA)

John and I have been friends since high school. We shared the same interests and circle of friends. Even though we went to different colleges we kept in touch and saw each other often.

We helped each other move into, and then out of, our first apartments. We stayed up late watching movies, talking about women, politics, and business.

After college John accepted a job in my town, and moved to a new apartment nearby. I had started a retail business of my own. We were both busy but found time to hang out a couple times a week.

Things were going well ... then the recession began to dry up sales. My customers had less money to spend, and so did I.

John was very supportive, helping me develop new sources of revenue. I was able to dip into my savings and ride through the recession for a while.

Then, I received the bad news that I needed back surgery to repair a damaged disk. The pain was not unbearable, but it was very uncomfortable, so I needed to get this done.

Insurance covered most of the operation, but I had a high deductible that I could not afford at the moment. John offered to lend me the money, saying I could pay him back when I had the money.

I refused, explaining that money can come between friends.

A few days later, I found a letter in my mailbox addressed to me which had not been post stamped. It contained the money I needed to cover the deductible. The letter said it was from a friend who wanted to help.

Of course I knew it was from John, although he acted surprised and denied knowing anything. As for me, I am forever grateful to have a friend like John.

Anonymous Friend's Gift, A Poem

John, I am grateful to have you as a friend,
because I know that we will be there
for each other in the end.

We have always been good pals, confided in each other,
and finished the other’s sentences
just like we were brothers.

I was worried money woes would tear our friendship apart.
But instead, you have shown me
that you have a heart.
