"Three January holidays are about important milestones in US history:"
- the birth of the United States as a self-governing nation, officially ending the American Revolution, the war against rule by Great Britain,
- the proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln that persons held as slaves were free,
- and the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., honored for his activism in the American civil rights movement.
We also celebrate our favorite of January holidays, the end of one (Western, or Christian) calendar year and the beginning of the next.
Festivities vary from country to country, but arrival of the new year is always celebrated with fanfare, sometimes lasting days ... religious ceremonies, feasts, fireworks, parties, and gift exchanges.
And in every language, a uniting spirit of hope, rebirth, renewal, and optimism underlies the celebrations. They affirm a deep and abiding joy at the arrival of a new cycle of life on earth.
