Little Brother's Halloween Poem

by Logan
(Maine, USA)

Brisk October air reminds me of a Halloween night that happened when I was three or four years old. I was running through the streets of our small coastal town right as the night was getting really dark. I was Mario of the Super Mario Brothers!

Nothing could beat me, all other kids were but a mushroom for me to jump on. My princess was the neighborhood's candy, and I planned on receiving my candy.

I was with my brother, nine years my senior, who kept a loose eye on me and made sure I didn't wander far. The only thing going through my mind was "Candy!" repeated over and over.

"Candy! Candy! Candy!" I was jubilant, ecstatic, running into the street carelessly.

I heard a blaring horn and twisted left, in time to catch a glipse of the truck coming towards me. I screamed. My Mario overalls provided me no power in this time of fear, but I had another savior. My brother.

His loose eye must have caught focus and saw me about to be killed. He ran in front of the truck and pushed me out of the way. His leg was injured, but not badly.

I didn't want any more candy after that so my brother carried me home, limping on his sprained foot. He cradled me and said "Lil' brother, you got to be more careful. I love you, man, and I wouldn't want anything bad to ever happen."

It's been more than twenty years, and my brother and I remain close. Every Halloween I am reminded of the bond between us.

Little Brother's Halloween Poem

A night full of fear, a night full of fun,
a night that shoots off and smokes like a gun.

A night full of love, a night full of joy,
a night to remember for a young little boy.

I remember the hugs, I remember the tears,
I remember the screech of tires so near.

I remember my brother, I remember his face,
I remember his love that pulled me safe.

A night I'll remember, I'll never forget,
a night and a brother I never regret.
