The Language Of Flowers

The Victorian meaning behind flowers we recognize today comes to us from several sources:

  • Western flower symbolism, drawing also from mythology and religion
  • European enthusiasm for botany and plant-collecting, brought home from botanical expeditions to new continents and to the tropics, during the 18th and 19th centuries
  • European fascination with the Orient, such as the Turkish selam, a language of objects. Selam was a system of memorization using Turkish words which rhyme. It included inanimate, everyday objects as well as flowers, fruits, and spices.
  • French "translation" of the Turkish language of objects into a parallel language of flower meanings
  • In Victorian England, both modest and gilded versions of books about the meanings of different flowers were plagiarized, embellished, published and popularized by dozens of writers during the 1800s
