Michelles New Years Resolution For Kids, Sharing!

by Steven
(Queen Creek, AZ)

This was Michelle’s first year to stay up til midnight on New Years Eve and share in our family's festivities. As the hour approached, each person revealed his or her resolution for the new year.

When it was Michelle's turn, she pledged to share half her money with less fortunate children in other countries. You see, Michelle is adopted from overseas.

None of us gave Michelle's resolution a second thought until summer, when I found her dividing her allowance into separate banks. She reminded me she was saving half her money for poor children overseas, as she had pledged.

We counted her savings together ... she had raised 26 dollars, or exactly half of her allowance. When I looked surprised, she said, “I promised my new years resolution!”

After much thought as to how we could put the money to best use, we found a micro-lending charity that allows donors to provide small loans to people overseas. Michelle was able to select the person she wanted to help, and type her information at the company's website herself.

Michelle's New Years resolution for kids has been a lesson in sharing for everyone in our family. She taught us the value of keeping a promise. And hers has meant so much to another family thousands of miles from our home.

This year when we make our resolutions, we will follow Michelle’s spirit of sharing and make resolutions which benefit others as well as ourselves. We will also remind ourselves during the year not to forget our promises!
