Mothers Day I Made Mom Cry
by Jen
It was the first Mother's Day that I was buying my mom a real gift ... no more painted macaroni necklaces or homemade cards. I was 14 years old and had been saving my babysitting money to get her something special for Mother's Day, even though I had no idea what it would be. I can't remember the store I went to, but it was probably Woolworth's or Ben Franklin (guess that tells you how long ago it was). I was just wandering up and down the aisles trying to find the perfect gift. I looked at fancy robes, but she already had a nice robe. I looked at little knick knacks but they didn't seem quite right. Then, in the kitchenware section I saw it! A silver-plated tea set. Now, my Mom has never been one to drink hot tea (being true Southerners, tea is iced). And this tea set wasn't exactly palace quality silver. But to my eyes it looked like a priceless heirloom. I checked the price on the cardboard box (told you it wasn't fancy), and had enough to pay for it and get her a card, too. I took the tea set home, found some wrapping paper, and hid it under my bed until Sunday morning. I woke early on Mother's Day and made her breakfast in bed, fixed her a tray, and served her. To her credit, she acted like that bowl of Lucky Charms was just what she was hoping to have for breakfast. I ran to my room to get her gift, carried it to her, and placed it on her lap. She picked it up, shook it, and wondered aloud what it could be. By this time I was about to scream and start unwrapping it for her. When she saw the box containing the tea set something happened that has never happened before - tears came to her eyes. "Oh, no," I thought, she hated the gift. Until she smiled, pulled me into her arms, and gave me a big hug and kiss. She told me it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen! It must have been, because it has been displayed in her kitchen for the past 30 years. Mothers Day Poem
