Mothers Day Poem, Special Woman
by Shirley Whire
I decided to go to college on the other side of the country from where my family lives. It was a hard decision since we are very close. I also play a sport, so never have much time to come home for a visit. A few weeks before Mothers Day last year, I got into a big fight with my parents about something relatively minor. It left us all feeling upset. To make amends and remind everyone how much we care about each other, I got a plane ticket to come home for Mothers Day as a surprise to my mom. I had sent my dad a video camera to attach to the computer as her present, so both of them thought that was her only gift. My two sisters were in on the surprise, and one of them sneaked out of the house saying she forgot to get our mom flowers and had to run to the store. Actually, she was coming to pick me up at the airport. Just as the family was sitting down to brunch, I rang the doorbell with flowers in hand. My mom screamed and started crying. Even my dad teared up. I'm pretty sure everything was forgiven after that, I'm just not sure how to top it this year. My mom says it was the best Mothers Day surprise she ever received, and my sisters are a little annoyed that they did not have a chance to do it first. Special Woman
