Musical New Years Resolution For Kids
by Angela
Last year my husband and I helped Eric, our nine year old, choose a New Years resolution which would be fun for kids. We devoted nearly four hours to it one afternoon before Eric announced his resolution “I want to learn guitar, and play like Eric Clapton.” Guitar Hall Academy seemed just right for Eric, and he started taking weekend classes there. A good guitar and a few books later, the total investment came to $300. Eric was very enthusiastic during the initial months, practicing for 2 to 3 hours every day. He excitedly explained to me what he learnt in class, and within a week he was playing the basic “Happy Birthday” tune. Eric soon began to understand the challenges he faced. There were exams, assignments to complete, and pressure to maintain his #2 position in the class. Progress was often slow but his passion never left him. He graduated the beginner's level and next two grades easily at the academy. By September Eric was playing nicely, but was concerned he would not be able to live up to his New Years resolution to play as well as Eric Clapton. I gently reminded him how much he had learnt, and that he would play better and better as time went on. I suggested he concentate on the academic lessons, too. In November he participated in the school recital, playing Eric Clapton’s lovely “Layla” from the album “Unplugged,” modified to Eric's own style. It was awesome for us to watch him on stage! He may not play quite as well as Eric Clapton yet, but he certainly kept his New Years pledge.
