New Years Connection Poem

by Chelo
(Holland, Ohio, USA)

New Year's morning was bright and sunny. It was the perfect beginning to a great year. New Year's Eve had been fun, too, although in an unconventional way. Even though I was home alone, you could say I was at a party.

My son was away in the Army. And my husband, well, his days of staying awake until midnight were far behind him.

So I called my mom to talk.

She lives quite a distance from me, so talking to her is always fun. My sister and her family were at her house for an impromptu New Year's Eve party, and laughter filled her house as they played Pictionary, the greatest board game ever!

Their laughter was contagious ... it felt like I was right there with them, as if we were celebrating New Year's Eve together.

Before I knew it, the stroke of midnight arrived, and my sister's daughter got a phone call - from my son! He called to wish them all a Happy New Year from the Army base where he was taking classes. I had her wish him a Happy New Year from me. What a twisty route to pass along those wishes!

It was a great feeling, all of us connecting, albeit rather disjointedly, sharing love among us. It was a warm feeling in my heart, knowing that even though far apart, we could still be together.

That night I went to bed feeling loved, happy, and optimistic about the year to come. And waking up, I felt leftover happiness from the night before.

I know that no matter how far apart we may be, we're connected to the ones we love.

New Years Resolutions Poem

This is a day for fresh new starts,
for a new year has begun.
Go to museums, see the arts,
you'll learn, and have some fun.

Or do you want to lose some weight,
and get those skinny jeans?
If so, just use a smaller plate,
and skip those yummy beans.

You smoke, but really want to quit?
I did it, so can you!
The first few days, you're mean as spit,
but then, you're back to you.

Whatever way you start your year,
just try to do your best.
It all works out, so have no fear.
In life, we're just a guest.
