New Years Remembrance Poem

by Michelle
(Sylvania, OH, USA)

When I was a child my mother made the same New Years resolution every year: "I am going to lose twenty pounds," she said when the clock struck midnight. "No more junk food in this house!" she exclaimed.

Of course, this always made my sister and me worry. We worried that we would not have our chocolate sundaes after dinner on Friday night. We were just kids, and it was important to us.

After the first couple of years we learned that by the following Friday we were eating our Friday night sundaes again.

Although resolutions made at the start of the new year are meant in earnest, most people do not follow through with their plans. So I prefer to think of the New Year as remembrance of the past ... remembering the good without dwelling on the bad.

I like to remember the joy of what I did accomplish, the happiness I felt, and the people I shared those times with.

New Years Remembrance Poem

To all my friends, some old, some new,
the time has come to bid adieu.

To a year in the past, that cannot change,
a time we no longer can rearrange.

The past twelve months we’ve had some trials,
had some laughs and had some smiles.

We’ve gone through the good and through the bad,
at times we were happy, at times we were sad.

Yet the time has come to start anew,
to forget the times when we were blue.

Remember the fun, remember the good,
cherish the moments that we should.

Only the good times we remember and dwell,
and the rest of the times can go to h_ _ _!
