New Years Resolutions For Kids, My Sons Story

Last year my son made a New Years resolution for kids, to earn money for himself. I know this sounds odd coming from a child, however his plan was to make enough money to get a brand new electronics item he really wanted.

At the time, I felt I couldn't purchase this for him as the one he currently had was working perfectly fine, so I explained the reason. His response was "I am going to make my own money, then." I was impressed as he had never thought of such a plan before.

By summer I had completely forgotten about my kids New Years resolution, so I was very surprised to see that he had followed through with his plans and earned £200 ... unimaginable!

I did not know how he had achieved his goal, but after the beginning of the New Year, he did seem to spend more time than before at his computer.

I became curious and looked over his shoulder as he worked. I was astonished! He had created a kids gaming website on his own over the past six months.

Although I understood that his website was providing the income, I asked for details ... how, actually, did he manage it by himself?

He explained that he created the game site for fun, by uploading free games. He told all his friends about it. And they told their friends about it. Everyone from school was visiting his website.

He admitted he borrowed £3.50 from his friend's mother on her credit card to make up the £5 he needed for the domain.

Soon, everyone he knew (and many he did not know) were playing his games. Next, he learned how to put simple ads on his site, for which he received a small fee.

This experience filled me with mixed emotions. I was happy and impressed to see how dedicated my son could be when he works toward a goal which is important to him. At the same time, I felt a tiny twinge of guilt for not buying the item for him in the first place.

But I was so proud of him, that didn't last long!
