Quince in Mexico Like No Other
by Rosita
Los quince años o Quinceañera (15th) birthday celebration in Mexico is the right of passage for a girl into womanhood. Think of it as the south of the border Sweet Sixteen. Do you like Mariachis? There is nothing like starting your Quince Años with the sound of a beautiful mañanitas by your window. Traditional gifts of jewelry are, of course, always welcome by the young lady as she herself will offer a flower bouquet to the Virgin Mary on the altar. On the fiesta, there is always, or almost always, live music, tons - and I mean tons - of help to help foot the bill of this party, the “padrinos” (godparents) and a long list of uncles and aunts will be asked to sponsor some of the expenses like the dress, or even the music, the locale, food, cake and drinks. The formal dance with the father, grandfather and godfather are an event usually videotaped and the formal photo packages are now so “in style” you should not be surprised to receive a copy of the pictures with your “Thank you for attending” note after the party. Some families opt to travel instead of throwing the fiesta (party), my cousin Susan did this. Europe or Caribbean cruises are among the most popular destinations. Yet, the traditional visit to the church, mañanitas music, and flowers are still a must for every young Mexican Quinceañera.
