Second Anniversary Pizza Pie!

Our humble, heart-shaped anniversary gift!
Our second wedding anniversary seemed doomed from the start. My husband and I had gone all out to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, going the clichéd 'fancy dinner and expensive hotel' route. It had been perfect.
Year Two couldn’t possibly measure up. We’d recently bought a house, so money was tight. I was finishing up grad school, and the pressure of completing my thesis combined with the stress of moving had me absolutely exhausted!
My husband’s job was incredibly demanding at that time, which didn’t help matters any. A week or so before our anniversary, I told him we didn’t need to do anything to celebrate. Truth be told, I expected him to forget it, since he was so preoccupied with work.
The day of our anniversary was unexceptional. When I woke up, my husband had already left for work to beat the morning traffic. That's how it had been for months; we rarely even saw each other anymore.
I spent the morning fine-tuning my thesis and spent the afternoon frantically running errands before the bank, grocery store, optometrist’s office, and library closed for the day. By the time I got home, I was exhausted.
My husband arrived home shortly after that and looked equally exhausted. He’d picked up a pizza on the way, anticipating (quite correctly) that I hadn’t had a chance to even think about making dinner. We sat down in front of the TV to eat, pushing a pile of my textbooks off the coffee table to clear room.
It was far from romantic.
When I opened the pizza box, I saw that the pizza was cut out in the shape of a heart. Despite all the chaos in our lives right then, he’d remembered our anniversary!
That meant so much to me. We spent the evening eating pizza, watching movies, and cuddling on the couch. It was certainly low-key and nothing extravagant, but it was exactly what we needed to reconnect during that tumultuous time.
