Sister's Funny Birthday Poem

by Sara Jenkins
(Mattawan, NJ, USA)

For my fourteenth birthday party I had three of my best girlfriends over for a sleepover party. My brother was allowed to have one friend over but they had to agree to stay out of our way because, after all, it was my special day – no brothers allowed.

After all the movies were watched, all the popcorn and cake eaten, the girls and I settled down and were giggling and whispering each other to sleep when we heard "BANG!" And then "CRASH!" A nasty ogre with crazy hair and a deformed nose came pummeling through my bedroom window.

One of my girlfriends let out a scream, another sat with mouth open, and the third went running to fetch my parents or call 911.

And I, watching my brother’s widening grin with the Halloween mask now in his hand, realized why his ploy was effective against my friends but didn’t scare me one bit. It's because I was the only one among my girlfriends who had a brother. And that’s just what brothers do <sigh>.

Sister's Funny Birthday Poem

At thirteen years I knew I was mature as I could be
until the seventh day of March and fourteen I would see.

Sophisticated as I am with friends like grown-ups, too,
I warned my brother, “Stay away! This party’s not for you.”

Late at night and winding down, We girls fell fast asleep.
But through the pane a sight grotesque, a boogeyman did leap!

One girl did scream, another gasped, another sat in huffs.
But I alone, a sister knew ‘twas just a brother’s bluff.
