Veterans Day Appreciation Poem
by James

I was only twelve years old when my uncle was deployed to Desert Storm. I didn’t understand what war was, but I had a sense that he was in danger by participating.
I was upset to see him go. He was the uncle I was closest to and the one who always brought me gifts and candy. I was worried, and also a little angry at him for being chosen to go. I stayed in my room.
Before he left, he came to talk. He told me everything I wanted to hear. Especially that he promised to come back.
He left the morning after Veteran’s day, which came to represent the day my uncle went to fight for liberty in the world. He did come back as promised, and as I grew up, my esteem for him grew, too.
I learned later that my grandfather served in World War II. With these heroes in my family, I am honored to be related to veterans who served.
Veterans Day Appreciation Poem
Soldiers, sailors, I salute you
for all the liberties you rescue,
for the people you protect,
and the evil you correct.
Veterans Day is meant for you
and for the hope that you renew.
We thank you on this special day
for service in your selfless way.
